Stainless Steel 410S is a low carbon, non-hardening modification of Stainless Steel 410. The low carbon and a small addition of aluminium minimise austenite formation at high temperatures which restricts the alloys ability to harden.
The alloy remains soft and ductile even when rapidly cooled from above its critical temperature. This means it is suitable for applications such as valves and pumps. It is also used in some car exhaust systems.
Stainless Steel 410S is not generally suitable for use at temperatures above 300C as it suffers from carbide precipitation which reduces its corrosion resistance.
Stainless Steel 430 has good machinability and is suited to general purpose machining. It can be machined by all standard methods including turning, drilling, milling, sawing and grinding. However, due to its hardening properties it is not as easy to machine as Stainless Steel 304.
It is also less corrosion resistant than Stainless Steel 304, so it is not recommended for use in environments where aggressive corrosion is likely.
